KNOWLEDGE 12-1:30am
Columns of Knowledge LLC is a group of different people with different ideas about life, music, and culture. We are influenced by everything we see, hear, and experience. We take note of trends and set trends. Love, life, music, friends, etc... the things we all do our best to NOT take for granted; this is what Columns of Knowledge is about.
Long before attending his first underground dance events, Chris McDonald aka Knowledge was booking band events under the Columns of Knowledge company name. Punk, ska, hardcore bands, funk metal, and even regular rock all came into the playing field setting the stage of diversity that would later be known as the Columns of Knowledge motif for blending genres and cultures together to gain exposure to different audiences. It was during this time Knowledge attended Don't Panic, his first "rave" experience @ The Tune Inn on June 30th 1994, at a local band venue. The party was thrown by Adam Warped and Tom Grin. It hosted such talents as Onionz, Odi, and Overload and many other djs popular to that time. When Knowledge began attending CCSU for a communications major in Sept. 1994, he was brought to his 2nd rave called "Planet Earth". He went with James Emanuelson, aka Dj Red Moon, the 1st Columns of Knowledge, Jay's gf of the time Christine... and met up with Kalomo aka Dj Meszenjah of Awake and his partying friends. During the rest of 1994 into 1995 he began experiencing more and more Brooklyn warehouse underground culture, outlaws, and began following talents like Odi, Josh Wink, Scott Henry, Nigel Richards, and of course the godfather, the goat, the man behind almost the origination of all things east coast... Frankie Bones.
In April 1995 Knowledge tossed his first event called Circus Maximus. It hosted Wilhelm K, Skeet, Kunjun, Sir Charlz, Trope, and others. It was a HUGE loss as it went up against several other events that date but it layed a foundation for the amazing history to come. It was held at an infamous venue: Newburgh Skate Park in upstate NY.
Knowledge left college in March 1995 to persue a career in underground music. His 2nd event Life on Sept 2nd 1995 was another loss but it was originally designed as a benefit for the UCONN Cancer Research Center. This event was held @ the Hartford Civic Center. Some talents were: Dietrich from Prototype 909, Sprout, James Christian, MDMA (aka Type R the 1st Columns dnb dj) among many others.
In December 1995 Knowledge teamed up with Brian Gionfriddo aka Dj Donut of Infinite Beat Records & Spiritual Emporium fame. This was held @ the Bristol Skate Park in Bristol, CT, only 10 minutes from the house Knowledge grew up in. This was the 1st Columns event to break even and hosted Heather Heart (who inspired Madame Buddafly to start djing on this night), Nigel Richards (the dj who inspired Knowledge to spin in Apr 1995), and Dale Charles (a famous Boston/Cali dj who now is a fulltime dad and producer). Over 500 in attendance it began a trend...
From 1996-1998 Columns of Knowledge continued hosting 1 off events all over CT. Many venues and headliners and famous stories followed...
In Feb. 1998 Knowledge threw the infamous Refresh show... a sequel to the final Bristol Skate Park show which was closed down due to negligence on the venue's part...
Refresh (the 2nd in the famous Columns of Knowledge FRESH series) was held @ The Sting. This nightclub hosted many infamous shows of different crews. Refresh was the 1st major Columns of Knowledge success in what would become the GOLDEN YEARS for COK. At this time Knowledge was engaged, was beginning to desire producing vinyl, and everything seemed possible...
1998's shows continued with Magnificent, All Out Sunshine 1, 20 (celebrating its 20th show), they co-hosted a show with Kingsize USA, and did a few other events as well.
1999-2001 continued the upward trend... Fresh became a full time series, All Out Sunshine continued every summer becoming NE's top annual summer event, some intimate gathering for dnb began with a company Massiv Movement. Columns of Knowledge's dj family grew: Madame Buddafly, Todd Buckler, and a live act Brain Probe came in. Brain Probe helped release Knowledge's 1st record co-produced with Sunflower aka (Kellie Codianna his wife 12/30/00). This was an amazing time.
In late fall 1999 Knowledge discovered he would be a father. On 12/30/99 he was married to Kellie Jean Codianna. Zachary Malcolm McDonald was born on 7/2/00. He began building his studio at this time in his basement. More events followed...
Oct 14th 2000 the largest Columns of Knowledge attendance occurred. 3500+ patrons sold out the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, MA. Moonshine Over America was on its 2000 tour feat: Micro, Feelgood, Cirrus live PA, Dieselboy, AK1200, Dara, Keoki, and Dave Aude. It was an incredible time.
During all of this Wilhelm K moved to the mid-west and began Columns of Knowledge midwest. He threw many successful shows out there as well.
Events continued... then...
June 2nd, 2001 AWW YEAH.... New Haven Coliseum Columns hit the brick wall @ 90 MPH. A major loss, security being very rude to patrons, police controlled the party, things were completely out of control... a show with enormous potential suddenly became an enormous loss. $42000 in 1 night disappeared....
But Knowledge pressed on...
From 2001-2004 he continued hosting events... Asylum in Springfield, MA was made a legend by his Happy Holidays, Get Lucky, Skool'd, & Fresh series amongst many others including multiple collaborations with True Prod. (ex. Blackout, Spanked).
On March 10th 2004 Knowledge received a phone call from Jeff Gil aka Dj Gil-T. The Asylum was being closed down. Springfield, MA was closing the club's door possibly forever. Despite all efforts, the club stayed closed.... Another chapter ended.
Dance music suffered.
In July 2004... in an effort to try one more time to make a difference and set new standards Knowledge co-produced the annual ONE NATION event. This was held @ Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. Stuck On Earth's magnum opus event with COK alongside for the ride all seemed deemed for success. This was not to be the case however. $35k down from the Columns side... Knowledge had hit the wall once more.
It was during the spring of 2004 that Knowledge found new inspiration for his music. Jenni aka Jenni from the Block, aka Jenni4yourthoughts wandered into the picture. a patron of dance music since 2000 and attendee of many Columns events, Jenni and Chris Knowledge slowly developed a long term friendship. She kept him motivated during times financial loss and helped him continue to enjoy the music he grew up with as he closed down his social circle of industry and began finding a new path... a life without throwing events...
Having been through divorce, losing his home, his $, and his image he had built... alongside his record label (see record label history).... Knowledge entered a time of "no fear". When one loses everything except their son (Zach), and their music... what is there to fear? Humbled beyond anything ever experienced he began a soul-searching process which lasted until 2005.
While doing data entry temp work again for the first time in 10 years, Knowledge began a dialogue with JJ Blades of Spiritual Emporium. It was going to be 10 years since the original Circus Maximus. Putting down some past differences, JJ allowed Columns to host its 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY on Apr 1st, 2005. This event was headlined by locals, was only $10-15 and brought in almost 300 friends and industry and patrons to celebrate one of the Northeast's longest running event planners. Jenni4yourthoughts co-produced this show...
More time goes by, real world closes in... Knowledge thinks it's over for sure. 10 Year was the end...until he is proved wrong... again....
Asylum Reunion and Skool'd 3 are dropped into his lap, followed almost immediately by an In Assoc. event scheduled for Oct 2005.
But WHY do more? Wasn't 10 years enough? Enough music, life, and living?
There is the future to be concerned with. Mine, yours, and all of us...
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW??
I can't speak for you. I won't try. Tomorrow is happening now cuz we are writing this nuts as we live it every single second today now. So... we must make changes... if we love this life and we aren't doing the suicide ride then we will need to make reasons to live on this planet.
My purpose in this life is the improvement of life. I believe in the religion "Everything Must Happen For A Reason". My church is this planet and I don't pray to a GOD who allows rape, genocide, famine, incest, and many other atrocities on this planet. I pray to a Universe to allow guidance and intuition and spirituality to occur in real space time so we might all feel the influence of the universe at work inside of us... not just some nanosecond blip in the cosmos which barely can acknowledge life. Our lives are all connected as we humans, the most evolved thing on this blue ball planet, continue this process of growth and development. My concepts and ideas will bring the evolution of life in my state, my country, and maybe across waters.
2005 Columns of Knowledge is re-born...
Multiple record labels all under the umbrella of Columns of Knowledge Recordings.
Columns of Knowledge event production is lifted to a next level situation with MANY upcoming events again.
Knowledge musik djing at its finest, intuition, off the cuff, and completely raw every time out.
No fear music....
Subliminal Intuition... the T-shirt division... a company trademarked and beyond the description of the rational mind. Concepts and imagery combined with artwork and intuition to link and speak directly with the world and the music and the people. Global conscious humor from the heart for those with or without spirits.
And now the future: 2006 finds another rebirth of sorts... after a 4 month hiatus and solitude... a decision is made to continue pushing forward the message of music, unifying minds, and being a beacon of light in an often dishonest culture of underground dance. With the assistance of others dedicated to the cause, Columns of Knowledge now begins a rebirth of professional dance events by continuing to set better standards and making new trends... now the true fun can begin.
